the story
My brother and sister-in-law were expecting their first child and were full of anticipation and excitement. There was so much to look forward to and prepare for - mostly exciting things! But one major piece of their pregnancy journey continually brought stress and anxiety: medical bills and health insurance. They were overwhelmed with all the insurance documents and conflicting bills that continually showed up in their mailbox. They were suspicious of over-charged bills from their provider, and incorrect coverage from their health insurer.

I experienced this for myself with my own pregnancy a couple years later. Having worked in the Healthcare space for many years, I knew there was an opportunity to help bridge the gap between the health insurer and the medical provider, and give more clarity and power to the patient throughout her pregnancy journey.
primary research
I began by interviewing six couples who had a baby within the year. I took the data points from those interviews and sorted them using six different lenses: values, modes of behavior, pain points, strategies, activities, and process steps. From here, I identified the recurring themes throughout the data, and finally, I analyzed these themes and pulled out three key insights shown below. These insights shaped three How Might We questions.

In tandem with user feedback collected via surveys as well as collaborative design review session with a few of the couples that were interviewed in our primary research stage, I did significant design iteration and prototyping.

While concepting and designing the product, I performed in-depth analysis on the market as well as extensive business modeling to ensure the product was desirable, viable, and feasible.
